Greetings on a snowy Sunday morning! What a pleasurable exercise to counteract the winter doldrums! I have several activities helping me get ready for Spring...Last week I started seeds including some heirloom tomatoes, lettuces & spinach, kale & chard, and green onions. Happily they are up and going like gangbusters. Past seed starting experiences were not successful as everything succumbed to the dreaded damping off disease, but hope springs eternal! This year I'm trying again, and bottom watering the seedlings with a weak chamomile tea solution to hopefully coax them along to transplanting. I also became a member of two area community gardens for the first time this year, sharing my plots with a fellow master gardener intern - an experience I'm really looking forward to. The community garden plots closest to me in my neighborhood have gardeners from all over the world, who are growing their native vegetables / roots / fruits using very interesting techniques, including lots of bamboo trellising and an oriental restaurant owner who recycles all his shrimp shells! My wonderful Howard County Master Gardener internship training comes to a close this month, after which the class of '09 will go forth and share / exchange gardening knowledge. Two projects I'm gearing up for are the MD statewide Grow It! Eat It! community garden initiative, and the Alpha Ridge Landfill composting program. Aahh, it's going to be a great year...

Howdy Wiley I am so excited to get ready for Spring planting. I am so thankful that you have taken the time to create this blog and help and encourage us Garden Dummies. This is also especially wonderful for those who have been planting for a while or just getting started. Wiley has been a true inspiration to me and continues to be educating me about timing, composting, seedlings and so much MORE! I look forward to adding some pictures this year of my first Garden. The Winter Rye looks really good. I took Wiley's advice in the fall and planted $10 worth of seed vs. eating out and boy I am so glad to have used the money to see a future crop than adding on a couple of pounds from that BIG Mac that I really wanted. Oh well the sacrifice was worth it. Thanks Wiley! Have a great day!

Remember, it was YOU that inspired me! Let's see, what was the question!
"If you only had $10 to invest in something, what would it be?"
The answer: "Seeds!"

I am so excited! I planted 72 seeds on Feb. 1 - 4 kinds of tomatoes and 1 kind of green bell peppers. On March 1, I transplanted them to big pots! Pray they all make it!
